Flavia Pennetta won the final of the US Open, one of the most important tennis tournaments in the world, winning on his compatriot Roberta Vinci, for two sets to nil. During the awards ceremony, Flavia Pennetta has also announced his retirement. It is the first victory of a Grand Slam (Wimbledon, Roland Garros, US Open and Australian Open) in his career, in a single tournament.

Flavia Pennetta is the first Italian to win a Grand Slam since 2010, when Francesca Schiavone won Roland Garros. The 28 year old Djokovic clinched his second such title at Flushing Meadows. For the Serbs it is the third title of the Grand Slam tournaments obtained in a year after the Australian Open and Wimbledon, bringing the total of his career at 10.
